Scott Backes
  • Scott oversees the vision, strategy, and execution for the Brydant organization. He is also instrumental in the programming and design of development projects. He has 21 years of experience in Corporate Management, Real Estate, and Real Estate Development. 

  • Early in his career, Scott excelled in the engineering departments of two Fortune 500 Companies Honeywell (HON) & Medtronic (MDT), which established his corporate philosophy of excellence and management training. He later transitioned his skill-sets and passion for real estate to civil engineering & land planning where he obtained over 12 years of diverse experience in industrial, commercial, and master-planned community developments.
    Scott founded a premier land development company in 2005, which represented over $500 Million in real estate developments. After the economic downturn in 2008, Scott began representing corporations in corporate real estate transactions. Scott is a graduate from Harvard Graduate School of Design in Advanced Management of Development and holds a certificate from Harvard Business School in Real Estate Management (REM). He is an active member of Harvard Alumni and serves as the President-elect for the Harvard Club of Phoenix and the Board of Directors for the Mesquite Medical Center Management District for the City of Mesquite, Dallas County, Texas.  Scott is active in his community as a foster & adoption advocate and the founder of an exclusive men’s fraternity known as the Veritas-Society.org, leading other business men in faith, virtue, courage, and excellence.

Steve Nielsen
  • Steve leads Brydant’s development as it relates to public finance, legal, and economic development. Mr. Nielsen’s has over 30 years of experience in planning and development. His expertise extends to large scale project management, public private partnerships and various financing vehicles instrumental in addressing education, medical, and government funding issues. 

  • Since 2003, Mr. Nielsen has held the position of Assistant Vice President for University Real Estate Development at Arizona State University. During his tenure with the University, Steve led the University in the development of a Comprehensive Development Plan for all four campuses, including the development of the new downtown Phoenix campus. Steve had been directly involved in the planning, design and construction of over 5,000 new student housing beds constructed on the four campuses utilizing various forms of third party financing and private development models. It is this expertise that makes Mr. Nielsen a valuable team member in the creation of new and innovative methods to fund education, medical, and government facility growth needs.
    Prior to Arizona State University, Mr. Nielsen served as the Community Development Director for the City of Tempe, Arizona. During his 24-year career with the City, Steve was directly involved with downtown revitalization, the design and implementation of the Tempe Town Lake, and actively involved in neighborhood preservation. This extensive public experience brings to the project, a thorough understanding of procurement, entitlement, permitting and development expertise necessary to construct large scale projects in extremely constrained timeframes.

David Jones
  • David leads business development, scheduling, contract management, and construction management of Brydant’s developments. Prior to Brydant, David spent 29 years in the highly competitive world of commercial general contraction – both on the local and national levels. 

  • He has held positions from laborer to superintendent, estimator to project manager, and design build department manager to president. Throughout his tenure He was tasked with designing and delivering over $1.3B of construction for the most difficult clients. This 7.3M square feet of construction covered the areas of manufacturing, education, retail, distribution, office, technology, defense, public works, power and corrections.
    Also, included in his responsibilities was turning around 50+ underperforming divisions and operating units across the country. These numbers do not begin to address the dozens of high performing teams he has resurrected and created. This corporate experience led David to further expand his business acumen by becoming a business analyst and a certified business coaching (CBC).
    David holds an Executive MBA from Arizona State University and has certifications from the US Green Building Council (LEED AP), the Design Build Institute, the American Institute of Constructors, the Project Management Institute, and as a certified business coach (CBC).

John Stiepel
  • John brings a unique and diverse investment banking background to Brydant with over 30 years of experience in the private and public debt markets, focusing on both tax-exempt and taxable bonds.

  • Prior to forming The Stiepel Group, John spent many years as a Senior Vice President in both the public and corporate finance departments of Sutro & Co, the investment banking subsidiary of John Hancock Insurance. He also spent some time in the wealth management divisions of Merrill Lynch and UBS focusing on the management of municipal bond portfolios for high net worth individuals.

    Within the public finance markets, John has an expertise in traditional municipal finance as well as other creative and non-traditional project finance. Within the corporate finance arena, John has developed an expertise and reputation in the lease securitization markets focusing on structuring and arranging construction and permanent financing on behalf of real estate expansion and new facility development for a variety of corporations. He developed the Securitized Mortgages for Anchor Retail Tenants (“SMARTs”) financing program that was used by several Fortune 500 and 1,000 companies on both a single asset and a pooled asset basis. Somewhat of a hybrid between the private and public sectors is the financing for affordable and market rate senior housing, a current focus of Brydant’s. To date, John has been involved in the financing of over $500 million of senior housing.

    John received his Bachelor’s degree in economics from Yale University and his M.B.A., with a concentration in Finance, from the University of California, Los Angeles. John is happily married to his high school sweetheart and is blessed with 7 stepchildren. He is also active in his community serving as President of his HOA on behalf of 2,000+ homeowners, committee chairman for the local chamber of commerce, and is a strong supporter of JDRF. Faith and family are foremost in John’s life and he is currently enrolled in The Master’s Program, a 3-year Christian Leadership program.

Michael Zajas
  • Michael manages capital market relationships, underwrites the financial structure and feasibility of proposed projects, and manages the newly formed Fund for Brydant Capital. He has been involved in numerous developments, brokerage and investment deals, representing the development team or the capital source. 

  • As part of an investment team he analyzed over 250 deals, most of which were new developments in industries like healthcare, hospitality, education, and franchises. He also has been exposed to a number of venture capital deals and public/private partnerships through his time vetting EB-5 (foreign investment) deals.                            
    Michael has over 11 years of experience in real estate and recently finished an Executive Program at the Harvard Business School for Fund Managers in Private Equity and Venture Capital. His prior studies at Thunderbird School of Global Management focused on Negotiation and Global Finance. Michael obtained a Master’s of Real Estate Development from the WP Carey School of Business at ASU with focuses in Finance, Construction, Design, and Real Estate Law. He is also a member of the ULI’s (Urban Land Institute) Young Leaders Group, LAI Pathfinders, and on the board of ASU’s MRED Alumni.

Rose Arck
  • Rose leads the Brydant Real Estate Development Services as it relates to entitlement, project management, and administration. Rose joined the Brydant team in 2016.  She has more than 30 years of experience in real estate development and corporate operations. 

  • She has applied her unique knowledge and business acumen with both real estate and corporate operations to become a trusted advisor to a broad spectrum of clients including national corporations, entrepreneurs, investors, developers and government agencies.
    Prior to joining Brydant, Rose founded ACS Realty Services after completing her 21 year career with The Dial Corp where she was responsible for global real estate decisions and project management for the various subsidiaries of the corporation. She was also the primary real estate and finance manager for two real estate subsidiaries, Dialcor Realty and TLC Realty, with a portfolio of more than $1 billion.
    Because of her unique experiences, Rose specializes in assembling highly qualified expert teams to address issues such as Portfolio Planning & Asset Management, Project Management, Challenging Entitlement & Development, Foreign Trade-Zone Services, Corporate Relocations, and Condemnation Case Management.  
    Rose has managed more than 12 million square feet of office, industrial, and retail property development and nearly $1.2 billion in transactions.

Amanda Paul
  • Amanda leads Marketing and Sustainability for the Brydant Organization. With an extensive background in Sustainability and Environmental Management, Amanda has worked with a range of companies and organizations to help them identify, assess, and structure frameworks to achieve their corporate sustainability goals. 

  • Her previous experiences with a Fortune 150 company, State Universities, and non-profit organizations have enabled Amanda to work closely with high level Sustainability, Environmental, and Marketing Directors, to Facility Managers and on-site end-users to implement corporate or organizational sustainability programs and objectives. Amanda has been the driving force for several organizations to promote brand awareness and leverage multiple marketing channels such as website development, social media marketing, email campaigns, blog sites, and marketing collateral. Amanda holds a Bachelor of Science from Arizona State University in Housing and Urban Development, a Master of Sustainability and Environmental Management from Harvard University Extension School, and a Master of Global Innovation Management from a joint program at North Carolina State University and IAE Aix-Marseille Graduate School of Management in Aix-en-Provence, France.

Terry Krause
  • Terry focuses on the business and strategic development of specialized facilities in the Midwest Region. With the intent of enhancing economic growth within both the Public and Private Sectors, his efforts have supported a quality of life and an inventory of product for communities; institutions of higher education and healthcare; 

  • sports and public assembly venues; and corporate, commercial, and industrial stakeholders. His relationships with executive management within the design and construction industry have collaboratively supported gainful development of specialized, destination facilities. These experiences have served to develop meaningful client partnerships with trust as the benchmark of success. An engaging public speaker and industry leader, Terry’s accomplishments span three decades of service. Dr. Krause holds a Master of Arts in Education (M.A.) from Washington University (St. Louis) and a Doctorate Degree in School Administration (Ed.D.) from Indiana University (Bloomington).
